Hycom Model implemented at INCOIS

  • Topaz model based on Hycom (Bleck 2002) has been implemented on SGI altix Machine at INCOIS
  • Domain: The model grid is configured using conformal mapping (Bentsen et al. (1999) and hence having varying spatial grid resolution and not having a rectangular domain. The model is set up with the resolution ranging from approximately 14 km in north Indian Ocean to 42 km in Southern Ocean, sufficient to resolve the larger mesoscale features, with 30 hybrid layers. The bathymetry is interpolated to the model grid using GEBCO (1 minute resolution).
  • The mixing Scheme used is KPP, The model interchanges the vertical coordinates between z-level coordinates for resolving upper-ocean mixed layer processes, and isopycnic in the stratified open ocean.
  • The Model is initialized using Generalized Digital Environmental Model(GDEM) and uses the atmospheric forcing fields from the ERA40. Additional forcing fields include cloud cover data from COADS climatology
