Genesis of IOGOOS : Concerted efforts
of many individuals and institutions, orchestrated over
two years through the SOCIO Conference of November 2000
held at Perth, and the Indian Ocean Principal's Meeting
of November 2001 at New Delhi, India culminated in the
formal launch of the GOOS Regional Alliance in the Indian
Ocean (IOGOOS) in November 2002 during the Indian Ocean
Conference held at Mauritius.
Current Membership of IOGOOS : Currently, IOGOOS has
19 Members from 11 Countries and 2 Associate Members
from USA and IOC/Perth.

Ocean Conference.
- IOGOOS Workshop on Capacity Building
and Strategy for Ocean Data and Information Management
in the Indian Ocean Region was during December 8 -
10, 2003 at Hyderabad, India
- First Meeting of the IOC-IOGOOS-CLIVAR

- Second Annual Meeting of IOGOOS

further the initiatives being pursued up by them.

of IOGOOS |
- IOC-CLIVAR-IOGOOS Indian Ocean Panel
on Climate to coordinate and plan a unified approach
to all the basin-scale observations in the region,
for both research and operational oceanography
- Ocean Data and Information Management
for the Indian Ocean Region
- Remote Sensing Capacity Building Strategy
for the Indian Ocean Region for the next 5 years
- Marine Influences on Lowland Agriculture
and Coastal Resources (MILAC) for Indian Ocean Region
is being pursued by JCOMM and IOGOOS.
- Formulation of a pilot project on Monitoring
and Management System for shallow water penaeid prawn
resource in the Indian Ocean
- Formulation of a pilot project on Multi-scale
monitoring and mapping of keystone ecosystems through
remote sensing and participatory in-situ operations
- Formulation of a pilot project on Shoreline
Changes
- IOGOOS, along with other GRAs, is a
partner for the Project on GOOS Regional Alliances
Networking Development (GRAND) funded by European
Commission.
- IOGOOS is also gearing up to take an
important role in realising a mechanism to provide
tsunami warnings to the Indian Ocean Region building
upon the planned initiatives of various countries
in the region and the IOC.

The Objectives of IOGOOS-III |
a) To consolidate the efforts made so far and to
move forward with action plans to realise the
objectives of IOGOOS,
b) To evolve mechanisms and funding for implementation
of the projects,
c) To gear up participation in regional programmes
(e.g. Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System,
LME, as well as the upcoming initiatives on Oceans
and Coasts (GMA), in synergy
with other Intergovernmental and Regional bodies,
d) To expedite formation of National GOOS Coordination
Committees,
e) To enhance membership of IOGOOS,
f) To promote synergy with other GRAs and IOC Regional
Bodies,
