This course introduces researchers to oceanographic data management, including processing, preservation, visualization, and analysis of diverse datasets from observations and remote sensing. It emphasizes best practices and applications of well-managed data, with hands-on training in open-source tools. A special one-day fisheries module will cover data handling and statistical analysis of fisheries datasets, including practical exercises using open-source software.

Aims and objectives:

• Provide an introduction to Data Management.
• Introduction to the metadata, formats, quality control.
• Introduction to value added products, visualization of data.
• Introduce key statistical concepts for ocean data analysis, including probability distributions, correlation, regression and exploratory data analysis.
• Introduction to Open Source S/Ws for data analysis and visualization
• Familiarize participants with fisheries data types and quality control, and provide hands-on training in R for data handling and visualization.

Target Audience:

The training course is designed for the following target audience:

• Early research students, Early career professionals working on Ocean science, and who wish to learn fundamentals of data management, as well as early career professionals and researchers in marine fisheries science who need to manage and analyze fisheries data.

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the principles of ocean data management, including data flow from acquisition to dissemination.
• Apply international best practices for quality control of oceanographic and meteorological data.
• Use statistical techniques to analyze trends, variability, and anomalies in ocean time series and spatial datasets.
• Handle large ocean datasets and metadata using standard formats (NetCDF).
• Develop and apply scripts in Ferret for basic QC, analysis, and plotting of ocean parameters.
• Integrate observational and model data for operational oceanographic applications such as forecasts, advisories, and validation.
• Contribute to national oceanographic data services, decision-support systems, and global initiatives such as the IODE, GOOS, and IMOS.

Note:

Support for attending: No travel expenses (including to-and-fro travel charges) will be reimbursed to the selected trainees. However, accommodation (on twin-sharing basis) will be provided on first-cum first-served basis at our Guest House on payment of nominal charges to students upon production of Identity cards. Scholar can use their contingency to pay the charges.
